Satellite-based Services for Disaster Risk Management - Cyprus session

On 17 May 2023, the workshop “Satellite-based Services for Disaster Risk Management” was held in Nicosia, Cyprus. The workshop was co-organised by the European Union Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA) and Eurisy in cooperation with the Cypriot Department of Electronic Communications within the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy.

The workshop aimed at shedding light on the EU space Programme components and the services they can offer to final users in the specific domains of disasters and risk management. To provide an overarching picture of the development of the national ecosystem, local stakeholders are also invited to present indigenous capabilities to relevant users’ communities thus favouring exchange of information and best practices and leading to cocreation actions boosting the actual uptake of the solution presented. The presentations of the event can be found here.

At the margins of the workshop a Search and Rescue SaR exercise can be organised.

The video showcase the example of the ground-breaking Galileo Return Link Service (RLS), part of the Galileo SAR service. Thanks to the RLS, sailors in distress, when equipped with the appropriate beacon, will see a light verifying that their distress signal has been received by emergency first responders and that their location has been established.
